In 2000 Marco Grieser received a bursary by UNESCO to be artist in residence at PaaYaPaa Art Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. 3 years after a fire had razed East Africa´s oldest art centre to the ground Marco´s playful installations tell the story of a new beginning. Melted soda crates, half-burnt stereos and charcoaled sculptures come to life again seen through the lense of his camera. In September 2000 Marco Grieser, Eva Rønnevig, Wanjohi Nyamu, Gicheru Karuri and Ngeene Mwaura set off on their bicycles on a 1200km journey through East Africa. They started with a show at the National Museum of Kenya, and showed art and played music at art centers and villages along the way until their final exhibition in the Nyumba Ya Sanaa (House of Art) in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania. trace back left over signs of life from ancient cultures. I´m inspired by life on a boat in Cornwall. Sandy beaches, wind swept cliffs, rolling hills. I´m inspired by reality. Sandy bicycle wheels, wind swept toilet seats, decaying rubber gloves Sometimes I see myself as a magpie, except that I go for ugly, worthless and forgotten objects, as opposed to silver and gold.
